THE GEORGIA TRUST FUND WAS ESTABLISHED IN BRUSSELS

On 12 March documents were signed at the Permanent Delegation of Lithuania to NATO, which establish the Trust Fund under the NATO’s Partnership for Peace programme. The trust fund will provide assistance to Georgia in removing explosive remnants of war and in organizing medical rehabilitation of the injured people.

The Trust Fund is run by three NATO member countries: the Czech Republic, Estonia and Lithuania. Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia jointly initiated the project after the Georgia war of August 2008, when the Alliance received Georgia’s request to help removing explosive remnants of war and providing treatment to the victims.

The project will supply Georgia’s military forces with the necessary equipment, will train one of the explosives disposal units and will establish a medical rehabilitation centre at the military hospital in the city of Gori.

The project will be implemented by the NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA). It will be financed by volunteer NATO member countries and partner countries.

Lithuania’s Ambassador to NATO Linas Linkevičius said that this Trust Fund was a very important tool of practical cooperation between NATO and Georgia.

Vice-Prime Minister of Georgia and State Minister for Euro-Atlantic Integration Giorgi Baramidze attended the ceremony of signing documents and thanked the countries running the project for this significant initiative.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Claudio Bisogniero congratulated the countries that signed the documents.
