THE FUTURE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION DISCUSSED IN GERMANY

On 1 February during consultations in Germany Undersecretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Žygimantas Pavilionis discussed the future of the EU Constitutional Treaty and the Berlin Declaration marking the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.

At the meetings with German officials opinions on the EU Neighbourhood Policy, enlargement of the Schengen zone, relations with Russia were exchanged. Closer attention was paid to March European Council meeting where topical EU energy policy issues will be discussed. Lithuania striving for greater Union’s activity in solving the energy isolation problem holds very important the gas links with the EU member states.

Talking about the future of the European Union Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry noted that Lithuania supports German Presidency’s efforts to find solutions on the EU Constitutional Treaty.

“We hope that the Berlin Declaration will be an excellent opportunity to remind about common goals and values, and will create favourable conditions for the constitutional reforms,” Lithuanian diplomat said.

Lithuania proposes including provisions on common energy policy, EU solidarity and equality principles, neighbourhood policy, success of the European integration in the Berlin Declaration. Lithuania is particularly interested in the Berlin Declaration to give impetus to the EU constitutional process.
