THE FIRST STAR OF LITHUANIA’S MILLENNIUM THIS YEAR GOES TO DISCUS THROWER VIRGILIJUS ALEKNA
On 22 January, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas conferred discus thrower Virgilijus Alekna with the award of Foreign Ministry ‘The Star of Lithuania’s Millennium’ for promoting Lithuania’s name. V. Alekna is twice an Olympic champion and was designated UNESCO Champion for Sport. This is the first award of ‘The Star of Lithuania’s Millennium’ that is conferred for merits of promoting the name of Lithuania in the year of Lithuania’s millennium.
“Today it is my honour and a pleasure to congratulate Virgilijus Alekna. I am glad that our Olympic champion contributes to promotion of Lithuania’s name worldwide. We all know about his merits for Lithuanian sports, and it is my conviction that Lithuanian sports and diplomacy are most closely interconnected,” said Minister V.Ušackas.
Head of the Lithuanian diplomacy was glad with the achievements of the world class Lithuanian sportsman and wished him all the luck in the world.
“You are the best Ambassador of our country,” indicated Minister V.Ušackas, while presenting the award.
On the occasion of the millennium of Lithuania’s name, the award of Foreign Ministry ‘The Star of Lithuania’s Millennium’ was established in 2007. It is conferred to persons for merits to the Lithuanian state and its foreign policy.
The award of ‘The Star of Lithuania’s Millennium’ is conferred to the Lithuanian and foreign citizens for their special merits of promoting Lithuania’s name, fostering and developing country-to-country relations, also for their significant merits in the civil service.
84 people have now been conferred the award of ‘The Star of Lithuania’s Millennium’.
