THE FIRST LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR TO THE HOLY SEE AND THE MALTESE ORDER KAZYS LOZORAITIS DIED IN ROME

On 13 August in Rome Lithuanian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Kazys Lozoraitis died at the age of 78 due to a serious illness. On 6 May, 1992, a famous figure of exile K.Lozoraitis (1929-2007) was accredited as Lithuanian Ambassador to the Holy See. On 5 January, 1994 he was accredited as Lithuanian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Maltese Order. K.Lozoraitis was in office until 15 November, 2004. Since 2004 until his death Ambassador K.Lozoraitis continued working as a voluntary consultant at the Lithuanian Embassy in Italy. Ambassador K.Lozoraitis was the first Lithuanian Ambassador to the Holy See and the Maltese Order.

Having studied journalism, K.Lozoraitis worked in Italian radio in 1958-1972, and since 1972 he was on the editorial board for programs on Lithuania in Vatican Radio. Since 1960 he was personal secretary of the chief of Lithuanian diplomatic service in exile. In 1985-1992 he became Head of the Chancellery of Lithuanian Representation to the Holy See. Since 1980 he became vice-chairman of Italian Lithuanian Community.

Ambassador K.Lozoraitis was awarded the Grand Cross of Commander of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas and the Grand Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania. Besides, Ambassador K.Lozoraitis was the chevalier of the Order of St. Sylvester.

Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveys sincere condolences to the family of the Ambassador.

“Lithuania has lost an outstanding diplomat, Lithuanian patriot, and all the people who knew him have lost a humble, frank and caring friend. Three members of the Lozoraitis family dedicated many years to Lithuanian diplomatic service. K.Lozoraitis had many times declared that in the times of independent Lithuania we would have important goals and the most important of them is to create modern, dynamic and European Lithuania. By continuing the mission of this remarkable family of diplomats, we shall fulfil the will of K.Lozoraitis,” – said Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas.
