The European Union lists further Belarusian individuals

On 5 August 2024, the European Union announced a new package of individual sanctions against Belarus amid the ongoing deterioration of the country’s human rights situation.

“With the imposition of new sanctions against the regime of the Belarusian dictator in response to the persecution and imprisonment of the opposition, we reiterate clearly that systemic human rights violations and erosion of democratic principles will not be tolerated,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis.

The EU listed further 28 individuals, including:

  • various members of the judiciary, involved in the persecution of opponents of the Lukashenka regime and members of civil society and journalists, and who have issued sentences;
  • Furthermore, restrictive measures are also imposed on the heads of various correctional institutions for their role in the torture and ill-treatment of prisoners, including political prisoners;
  • Lastly, several long-time Lukashenka supporters who benefitted from the regime are also targeted. These include well-known regime propagandists and entrepreneurs.

EU restrictive measures against Belarus now apply to 261 individuals and 37 entities.

Those designated are subject to an asset freeze, and EU citizens and companies are forbidden from making funds available to them. Natural persons are also subject to a travel ban, preventing them from entering or transiting through EU territories.
