THE EUROPEAN UNION, LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN STATES UNDERTOOK TO LOOK FOR NEW WAYS TO REDUCE POVERTY
On 16 May Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas took part in the fifth European Union-Latin America-Caribbean Summit in Peru, where sustainable development, poverty reduction, climate change and other issues were discussed. Representatives of sixty states adopted in Lima a declaration, where states of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean undertook to look for new ways and new financing mechanisms for reduction of poverty and social exclusion as well as to take on commitments to decrease dioxide emissions and increase the potential of biofuel and renewable energy sources in their states.
At the meeting Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P. Vaitiekūnas presented successful Lithuania’s experience of democratic reforms and noted that there is a close link between reduction of poverty and democracy with effective public administration.
Minister P. Vaitiekūnas also underlined that Lithuania meets its commitments on reduction of pollution and dioxide emissions, launches initiatives for restoration of forests and ensuring effective energy consumption.
During the Summit Undersecretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oskaras Jusys met with Director General of Foreign Policy in Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs Juan Pablo Lira.
At the meeting the diplomats discussed important issues of Lithuania-Chile relations, possibilities of initiation of new agreements, promotion of business ties, prospects of cultural relations. They also spoke about famous 19th century Chilean scientist, Rector of Santiago University Ignotas Domeika, who was Vilnius University graduate and filomat and about commemoration of his memory in Chile and Lithuania. During the conversation O.Jusys also raised the problems of Lithuanian ships fishing near Chilean economic zone.
