THE EUROPEAN UNION CALLED FOR AN IMMEDIATE CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES AND A SUSTAINABLE CEASEFIRE IN THE NEAR EAST

On 1 August during the extraordinary meeting of the European Union’s General Affairs and External Relations Council  in Brussels the EU foreign ministers urged to cease  immediately the hostilities and ensure  a sustainable ceasefire in the Near East.

The EU Member States  expressed their readiness to contribute to formation of the international peacekeeping forces  and pledged to continue provision of humanitarian assistance to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas noted that this meeting demonstrated EU common efforts to handle the conflict in diplomatic and humanitarian ways and join the UN peacekeeping forces in the region.

“It is important, that the European Union took a unanimous position and strengthens its role in international conflict settlement,” Minister Vaitiekūnas said.

The EU ministers emphasised the need for negotiations for a political agreement, subscribed by all parties of the conflict, and the deployment of international peacekeeping troops having UN mandate.
