THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION IS ENCOURAGED TO ADOPT CONCRETE MEASURES FOR ENHANCING THE EXTERNAL EUROPEAN UNION BORDER INFRASTRUCTURE

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is prepared to share the available information on the bilateral Lithuanian-Latvian and European Union legal basis, as well as possibilities of claiming for damages with the members of Lithuanian National Road Carriers Association “Linava”.

On 13 March Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas informed the authorities and representatives of the Association “Linava” about the mentioned issues during the meeting, the purpose of which was to discuss the situation at the Lithuanian-Latvian border that occurred in the end of 2006, the enhancement of Latvian-Russian border traffic capacity and other important issues of the transport sector.

The participants of the meeting remarked that it was important to establish a precedent for Lithuanian enterprises to follow in case foreign institutions took measures tolimit Lithuanian business activities.

Minister P.Vaitiekūnas announced to the members of the Association that in order to avoid similar problems at the border in the future, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to address the European Commission and encourage taking certain measures at the EU level to enhance the external EU border infrastructure. This issue is also to be addressed during the meetings with responsible European Commission officers by the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the European Union.

During the meeting, in which the representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Lithuania also took part, the issues of tolls and changes to the related bilateral agreements were also discussed.  The participants of the meeting agreed to share information more effectively and co-operate to defend interests of Lithuanian road carriers in foreign countries.
