THE EU SPEAKS UP FOR THE FIGHT AGAINST PROTECTIONISM IN INTERNATIONAL TRADE
On 30 November - 1 December in Geneva, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė took part in the extraordinary European Union’s General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) meeting and the 7th ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The purpose of the extraordinary GAERC meeting was to reach accord on a common EU position at the 7th ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) that was held on 30 November - 2 December in Geneva.
The Council decided that it was necessary to increase the efficiency of the work of the regular committees of the WTO and to strengthen the fight against protectionism, including the efforts of the WTO’s Secretariat to provide monitoring to counter protectionism. The Ministers noted that the EU’s priority on the WTO’s agenda is to successfully conclude the Doha Round negotiations.
The Council agreed to assure the participants of the WTO conference that the EU would continue to fulfil its obligations in the area of trade facilitation and to attract the participants’ attention to the unjustified suspension of Montenegro’s WTO accession process. At the WTO conference, the EU is represented by the European Commission.
On 1 December, Vice-Minister A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė took part in the ministerial conference of the WTO. Representatives from 190 countries, various international and non-governmental organizations attended the conference.
