THE EU GENERAL AFFAIRS AND EXTERNAL RELATIONS COUNCIL DISCUSSED BELARUSIAN ISSUES ON LITHUANIA’S INITIATIVE

On 11 December at the General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) meeting in Brussels Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas raised the issue concerning withdrawal of access to generalised tariff preferences (GSP) status for the Republic of Belarus.

“I think that at this moment the adoption of this decision is a mistake,” the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy stated.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister stressed that this is political EU’s decision that may have negative political consequences.

According to the Minister, Belarus is standing on a crossroads between East and West. Ordinary Belarusian people will be the first to feel negative consequences of GSP status withdrawal from Belarus.

“Limitation of economic relations may have negative effect on Belarusian society’s attitude to the European Union. I believe that Belarus has European future that we have declared many times,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister marked.

The Belarusian issue was included into the Council’s agenda on Lithuania’s initiative.
