THE DEMARCATION OF LITHUANIAN-BELARUSIAN STATE BORDER FINISHED
On 10 March the demarcation of Lithuanian-Belarusian state border was finished, the last Lithuanian-Belarusian state border sign - a buoy in the Gilutės lake was set up.
This is the first eastern border of the EU that has been demarcated.
It is planned to prepare all necessary border demarcation documents by July and thereby finalize the implementation of Lithuanian-Belarusian agreement on Lithuanian-Belarusian state borders.
The negotiations on delimitation of Lithuanian-Belarusian state borders started in January, 1992. It was difficult to define this segment of Lithuanian state border, because administrative line between Lithuania and Belarus repeated the borders of farms that were constantly changed.
The negotiations with Belarus were started in February 1995 when an agreement on Lithuanian-Belarusian state borders was signed.
Following this agreement Lithuanian-Belarusian state borders demarcation works were started in 1996 and finished in March 2006.
