THE CURRENT AND FORMER PRESIDENTS OF THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL MET WITH THE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL
On 16 April a meeting of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon with the current and former presidents of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was organized on the initiative of President of the ECOSOC Dalius Čekuolis.
During the meeting ways for the UN and ECOSOC to contribute more effectively to the development cooperation and cooperate more actively with the high-level financial institutions tackling the global issues of poverty reduction and support for developing countries were discussed. The ways of meeting consistent commitments of the UN Specialized Agencies and Funds, and means of strengthening the role of the ECOSOC were also talked about.
During the meeting the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon expressed belief that ECOSOC reforms and new functions of this UN body would be carried out smoothly.
Thanking the UN Secretary-General for personal interest in the ECOSOC activities and reforms, D.Čekuolis indicated that implementing the new functions ECOSOC is organizing Annual Ministerial Review and Development Cooperation Forum during the High-Level Meeting this year.
Annual Ministerial Review is an intergovernmental forum during which the implementation of development goals will be evaluated. This year the first Development Cooperation Forum will help to identify major problems which are faced while encouraging the development cooperation and implementing the Millennium Development Goals.
It is anticipated that the UN Secretary-General will participate in the High-level Segment of the first reformed ECOSOC session in July this year.
During the meeting with the UN Secretary-General seven former ECOSOC presidents participated:
Ali Hachani of Tunisia (2006), Munir Akram of Pakistan (2005), Marjatta Rasi of Finland (2004), Ivan Simonovic of Croatia (2002), Markarim Wibisono of Indonesia (2000), Mr Juan Somavia of Chile (1998 and 1993), Ambassador Martin Chungong Ayafor of Cameroon representing Martin Belinga-Eboutou of Cameroon (2001) and current ECOSOC President Dalius Čekuolis.
The meeting of the UN Secretary-General and ECOSOC presidents was organized on 16 April, during the Special High-Level Meeting of ECOSOC with financial and trade institutions: the Bretton Woods institutions, the World Trade Organisation and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
