THE COUNTRIES ASPIRING TO JOIN NATO SHOULD BE GIVEN A CLEAR PROSPECT
On 21 September during an informal NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New York Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas noted that Lithuania would carry on its mission in Afghanistan and drew attention of his counterparts to the need for better coordination of NATO’s, European Union’s and NGOs’ activities in the country.
The Minister stressed that it is necessary to reform the current structure of NATO partnerships – it should be more flexible and correspond better to the present-day realities. Talking about possible enlargement of the Alliance, the Minister emphasised that countries aspiring to join NATO should be given a clear answer on the membership prospects.
Minister Vaitiekūnas welcomed the initiative of the Alliance to start an Intensified Dialogue with Georgia. The Minister also urged to continue practical cooperation with Ukraine and invited his counterparts to pay more attention to informing Ukraine’s society about the Alliance.
This was the last NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting before the Riga Summit on 28-29 November.
