THE BALTIC STATES PRESENTED A JOINT CANDIDATE TO THE POST OF THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF UNESCO
On 17 November, the three Baltic States presented Ina Marčiulionytė, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Lithuania to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as their joint candidate for the post of the UNESCO Director General.
The candidature was officially submitted through a letter addressed to the chairman of UNESCO's Executive Board. The three Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania nominated I.Marčiulionytė for the highest position in any international organization ever held by a Lithuanian.
Ambassador Ina Marčiulionytė has been actively engaged in UNESCO since having been promoted to the level of Ambassador to UNESCO in 2003: The year after her appointment, she has been elected to the World Heritage Committee which she presided over in 2005 – 2006. Currently, Ambassador I.Marčiulionytė serves as Vice-Chairperson of the Executive Board of UNESCO, as well as several subsidiary bodies of the Organization: Chairperson of UNESCO's Headquarters Committee, the Vice-Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions and others.
In 2007 Ambassador I.Marčiulionytė was awarded the Cross of Commander of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas by the President of the Republic for outstanding service.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is one of the Specialized Agencies in the UN system. Founded in the aftermath of the Second World War, the Organization contributes since 1945 to the international efforts to preserve of international peace and security and furthers cooperation among governments in its core areas of competence: education, science, culture and communication.
The elections of the Director General of UNESCO will take place during the 35th General Conference of UNESCO in autumn 2009.
