The 27th anniversary of the establishment of Lithuanian-Ukrainian diplomatic relations marked in the Ministry
On 12 December, marking the 27th anniversary of the establishment of Lithuanian-Ukrainian diplomatic relations Minister Linas Linkevičius opened in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the exhibition of paintings and posters by Ukrainian children dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the statehood of Lithuania. Two new publications featuring the history of Lithuania and Ukraine were presented during the opening of the exhibition.
“We have been creating a solid foundation for our bilateral cooperation for the 27 years of our diplomatic relations; we have various successfully functioning bilateral formats. I wish to assure you that Lithuania is going to continue supporting the fight of Ukrainian people for freedom and independence,” noted the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Alfredas Bumblauskas, Professor at the Faculty of History, Vilnius University, presented two new publications about the shared European history of Lithuania and Ukraine, “On the Crossroads of Cultures” and “The History of Lithuania to All”, in the Ukrainian language.
Arūnas Matelis, Chairman of the Lithuanian Cinematographers’ Union, passed an open letter to the Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, who is illegally imprisoned in Russia, where he congratulated Oleg Sentsov on having been awarded the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize and expressed Lithuanian cinematographers’ firm support for his fight for the freedom and independence of Ukraine.
Lithuania and Ukraine established their diplomatic relations on 12 December 1991. The 27 years witnessed the building and successful functioning of various formats of bilateral cooperation – the Council of the Presidents of Lithuania and Ukraine, bilateral and trilateral assemblies of parliamentary cooperation, the Lithuanian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission, Lithuania-Ukraine Commission for European Integration, Ukrainian Lithuanian Council of Youth Exchanges, etc. Lithuania has implemented ten Twinning projects in various areas in Ukraine.
