THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND SWITZERLAND IS MARKED IN VILNIUS
On 28 June in Vilnius, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė took part in the event, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the recognition of the Independence of Lithuania by Switzerland and the 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Switzerland.
The book “Helvetia and Lithuania” (2011) by journalist Judith Lewonig was launched at the event. The book chronologically traces tracks of Switzerland in Lithuania, starting with an amber route and ending with the most recent times. Based on hitherto unpublished archival documents, the book provides new facts about bilateral relations between the two countries.The author of the book is an Austrian journalist, who feels sympathy to Switzerland and has worked for several years in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. She has also lived in the three Baltic States.
The event was attended by the Ambassador of Switzerland to Lithuania Gabriela Nutzi Sulpizio, Member of the Seimas (Parliament) and Chairman of the Group for Interparliamentary Relations with the Federation of Switzerland Gediminas Navaitis, other guests.
The event was co-organized by the Embassy of Switzerland in Lithuania and the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Switzerland recognized Lithuania’s Independence on 19 July 1921. The two countries re-established their diplomatic relations on 5 September 1991.
