THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LITHUANIAN-POLISH DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS IS A GOOD OCCASION TO LAY DOWN THE GUIDELINES FOR THE FUTURE COOPERATION, FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS

The 20th anniversary of the Lithuanian-Polish diplomatic relations is not only a good opportunity to evaluate the path up which we have come together and our joint achievements, but also to lay down the guidelines for the future cooperation, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis says.

During the round table discussion “The Lithuanian-Polish diplomatic dialogue over the two decades” that was organized at the Lithuanian Embassy in Warsaw on 31 August, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Egidijus Meilūnas welcomed participants of the discussion on behalf of A.Ažubalis.

“I believe that the partnership between Lithuania and Poland will be further successfully developed within the European Union and NATO, and our economic and cultural ties will be actively strengthened by enhancing the prosperity of our peoples. Learning from our shared history and with sense of achievements, let us make Europe modern, open, dynamic, without old and vicious stereotypes,” E.Meilūnas said on behalf of the Minister.

Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland Grażyna Bernatowicz and Lithuanian Ambassador to Poland Loreta Zakarevičienė also welcomed participants of the discussion.

Head of Policy Analysis and Research Division at Eastern Europe Studies Centre Vytis Jurkonis presented an analytical review “Lithuanian-Polish Relations Reconsidered: a Constrained Bilateral Agenda or an Empty Strategic Partnership?”

According to V.Jurkonis, the analysis of the Lithuanian-Polish relations shows that the strategic partnership of the countries was a presumption for their smooth Euro-Atlantic integration.   Today, both countries have to expand bilateral cooperation and make use of multilateral frameworks, while strengthening energy cooperation and the EU’s Eastern policy.

The Lithuanian-Polish diplomatic relations were re-established on 5 September 1991.

On 6 September, a discussion is organized at the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations. During the event, the first Lithuanian Ambassador to Poland, the first Polish Ambassador to Lithuania and cultural diplomats will share their memories of the process of the re-establishment of relations between the countries, as well as their thoughts about the future cooperation between Lithuania and Poland.
