The 10th Vilnius Russia Forum discusses measures to contain Russia
On 6-7 June 2024, the tenth Vilnius Russia Forum brought together more than 100 representatives of the Russian opposition, Western politicians and experts, who discussed options to stop Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and the ongoing malign hybrid attacks against liberal democratic societies that threaten European security, democracy and the rules-based international order.
“The war is going on not only in Ukraine; Putin is also approaching our borders. This war is not just a war of Ukraine. As never before, this is our common fight for the future of Ukraine and of Europe as a whole. We are also fighting for the vision of a democratic Russia to which many of you have dedicated your lives,” Landsbergis said.
The forum also addressed Russia’s accountability for aggression and war crimes in Ukraine, political developments following the so-called presidential elections, the deteriorating human rights situation, political prisoners and the fight against propaganda and hybrid threats.
Among the forum participants were prominent democratic opposition leaders and activists Yulia Navalnya, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, and Gennady Gudkov, lawyers who defended Alexei Navalny, Vladimir Kara-Murza, and other political prisoners, human rights defenders, anti-war activists, journalists, and public figures.
Representatives of the Russian democratic opposition stressed the need to continue consistently supporting Russia’s civil society and anti-war initiatives and strengthening its resistance to propaganda.
Representatives of the European Parliament, Italy, Sweden, Lithuania, Western diplomats, NATO, the EU, the Council of Europe, the European Endowment for Democracy, USAID, and influential media outlets from around the world also participated in the discussion.
Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs organised the Vilnius Russia Forum with partners, including the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Endowment for Democracy, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and others. The Vilnius Russia Forum has been held since 2014. The next Vilnius Russia Forum is scheduled for 2025.
