SWEDISH FOREIGN MINISTER VISITS LITHUANIA

On 12 November, Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Laila Freivalds came to Lithuania on a working visit. In Lithuania, the Swedish Minister met with Lithuanian President Rolandas Paksas and her Lithuanian counterpart Antanas Valionis. Minister Valionis rejoiced at the meeting that his Swedish counterpart chose Lithuania for one of her first bilateral visits. Minister Freivalds came to Lithuania from Latvia and left for Estonia on 13 November. These are the first bilateral visits of Laila Freivalds as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, breaking the long-lived tradition to visit the Nordic countries first. During the meeting, the Ministers also discussed the countries’ positions at the Intergovernmental Conference, perspectives of cooperation between the Baltic and Nordic states and the topical issues of bilateral cooperation. On the evening of 12 November, Laila Freivalds attended the concert “Sounds of Sweden” in the Lithuanian National Philharmonic. “Sounds of Sweden” were the final concerts of a two-year cultural exchange project “Musical Links, Sweden-Lithuania 2002-2003”.
