SUPPORT OF THE U.S. TO LITHUANIA’S ENERGY INDEPENDENCE IS AN ELOQUENT ACCENT OF 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF RESTORED DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

Diplomatic relations with the United States of America  re-established twenty years ago were firm guarantee that Lithuania entrenching the restored statehood would be accepted in respectable community of world nations, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Ažubalis said at the opening of the exhibition dedicated to 20th anniversary of restoration of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and the United States. The exhibition was opened on 27 September in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Minister the resumption of diplomatic relations also allowed thousands of American Lithuanians restore ties with the homeland, which they were forced to leave because of war and Soviet repressions.

 A.Ažubalis speakingA.Ažubalis also highlighted close partnership between the states, strong support of the U.S. for Lithuania's energy independence, enhancing cultural cooperation and efforts to promote development of bilateral trade.

“Today, when Lithuania finally shakes off the status of energy province, we rejoice at clear and unambiguous support of our transatlantic partners, of which President Barack Obama  has once again personally assured me during my recent visit to the United States. We also initiate a strong development of bilateral trade (these days, business mission led by the U.S. Congressman John Shimkus is visiting Vilnius), strengthen cultural cooperation and look forward to the implementation of President Ronald Reagan's House idea in Vilnius. These initiatives are a breakthrough in our bilateral partnership and further proof that we are meant to prosper and change the world together,” the Minister said.

J.Shimkus, A.Ažubalis The exhibition in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized  together with the U.S. Embassy in Lithuania, displays photographs and documents that illustrate significant moments from  resumption of Lithuanian-U.S. diplomatic relations.

Opening of the exhibition was also attended by Member of the U.S. House of Representatives  John Shimkus and the U.S. Ambassador to Lithuania Anne Derse.

Lithuania and the United States resumed diplomatic relations on 6 September, 1991.
