STUDY ON THE PROSPECTS OF LITHUANIA-LATVIA COOPERATION TO BE PRESENTED IN THE LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY

On 20 January the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and  Latvian Embassy in Vilnius organize the presentation of  a study on the prospects of cooperation between Lithuania and Latvia. The study will be presented by its authors Lithuanian and Latvian ambassadors Neris Germanas and Alberts Sarkanis.

“When preparing the document, we noticed that our mere attention generated greater interest in relations between our states, revealed some new challenges. Moreover  the gained experience and knowledge broadened our horizons and strengthened the belief that the two Baltic nations - Lithuanians and Latvians - have not only a common history, a meaningful present, but also a common future,” the authors of the report state.

The aim of this study is to provide diverse and broad picture of the bilateral relations: to evaluate in general terms historical and contemporary events, opportunities for further cooperation in business, energy, transport, tourism, education, culture and other areas. The report also includes proposals for strengthening cooperation between Lithuania and Latvia.

For preparation of the report the authors used views of the ministries of Latvia and Lithuania, the information obtained during authors’ meetings with the representatives of municipalities near the border, business, cultural and public figures. The important official documents that define the strategic directions of development of Lithuanian and Latvian state and society were also taken into account.

After the presentation a discussion attended by Lithuanian and Latvian diplomats, political scientists, historians, representatives of government and academic institutions will take place.

Preparation of the report was initiated last year by the Prime Ministers Andrius Kubilius and Valdis Dombrovskis at suggestion of the Foreign Ministers of Latvia and Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis and Girts Valdis Kristovskis. The initiative was also dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
