STRENGTHENING LITHUANIAN-ICELANDIC BILATERAL COOPERATION

On 15 December State Secretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Algimantas Rimkūnas received the delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Iceland (Althingi) led by the Committee Chairman Halldor Blondal.

During the conversation both sides welcomed sucessfull Lithuanian-Icelandic political and economic relations, enhanced by both countries’ participation in the European Economic Area and NATO.

Members of Icelandic Parliament showed interest in Lithuania’s prospects of joining the Schengen area, which already includes Iceland, and in attitude to evolvement of democratic processes in the EU neighbour states and development of economic relations with these states.

The participants of the meeting also addressed both states’ cooperation in Afghanistan where Icelandic experts participate in the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghor province. Mr Rimkūnas underlined that for Lithuania Iceland’s contribution to civil projects for improvement of infrastructure, healthcare and social security is very important.
