Street in Florence named after Lithuania
A street in the city of Florence, Italy, was named after Lithuania on 18 September. During the ceremony, the Ambassador of Lithuania to Italy Jolanta Balčiūnienė welcomed the participants and expressed her gladness that the street was named after Lithuania in a place of such historical and cultural importance. Lithuania’s Ambassador also said that it symbolised a united Europe, as well as strong historical ties of Lithuania and Florence.
The Red Cross Wind Orchestra performed the national anthems of Lithuania and Italy during the opening ceremony. The solemn inauguration ceremony was attended by Lithuania’s Honorary Consul in Florence Enrico Palasciano and senior administration officials of Florence.
On the eve of the ceremony, 17 September, Lithuania’s Honorary Consul Palasciano held a meeting of Lithuanian representatives with politicians, cultural representatives and entrepreneurs of Florence, as well as members of the Lithuanian community on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Lithuania’s international recognition and its membership of the United Nations.
In June this year, the name of Lithuania was given to one of the squares in Palermo. Our country’s name has also been given to squares and streets in other cities of Italy, including Rome, Olbia, Grosseto, Longiano, and Battipaglia.
