STOCKHOLM HOSTS CONSULTATIONS OF THE NORDIC AND BALTIC COUNTRIES ON SECURITY POLICY

On 31 May in Stockholm, representatives of Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Nordic and Baltic Eight (NB8) met to discuss security policy issues. The Director of the Transatlantic Cooperation and Security Policy Department Gediminas Varvuolis presented important aspects of Lithuania’s incoming Presidency of the EU Council related to the dimension of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), and the position in the run-up to the European Council on 19 and 20 December, which is set to include a discussion on defence issues.

Participants of the meeting exchanged views on items on the EU-NATO agenda, arms control, regional security and cooperation.

On the eve of the meeting, Varvuolis participated in a round table discussion at the Lithuanian Embassy in Stockholm with security and defense experts from the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences, the Swedish Atlantic Council, a non-governmental organization Frivärld, and the media.

At the meeting, officials presented priorities for the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council related to the dimension of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), discussed key issues on NATO agenda, prospects for cooperation between Sweden and NATO.

In 2013-2014, the Lithuanian Embassy in Sweden is carrying out functions of NATO’s Contact Point Embassy in Sweden. The meeting is one of the series of events that the Lithuanian Embassy has organised as NATO’s Contact Point Embassy.
