Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania is rejecting the unfounded allegations and claims against the State of Lithuania, as made by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation on January 29, with regard to the trial over the January 13th events.

Lithuanian courts are independent and impartial. All cases brought before the courts are heard and determined based only on the actual circumstances determined and data collected in the course of the pretrial investigation. We find that namely Russia is trying to politicise the legal proceedings. The recent statement by the spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign affairs is yet another evidence to prove that. The claims made by Russia sound particularly hypocritical, in view of the fact that Russia specifically has ignored, on a numerous occasions, Lithuania’s applications for international legal aid in investigating the cases surrounding the January 13the events and the Medininkai checkpoint massacre. If Russia is indeed interested in smooth and prompt investigation of those cases and bringing to justice those responsible, we call for cooperation in investigating the above crimes.
