STATEMENT OF THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Lithuania together with other EU Member States has expressed its concern about the situation in Ukraine, which has formed after the run-off of the Presidential elections in Ukraine. International observers stated that the presidential elections in Ukraine did not meet the standards raised by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Council of Europe. Serious violations of the electoral order have been made. On November 24, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Lithuania Boris Klimchuk was summoned to the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he was told by Acting Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis about Lithuania‘s serious concern over the situation in Ukraine. On November 25 a conversation between Antanas Valionis and the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Konstyantyn Hryshchenko took place. Antanas Valionis expressed his regret that the Ukrainian Central Electoral Committee announced the final elections results without having evaluated its violations. There remains the solid basis for doubt if the results announced by Central Electoral Committee reflect the will expressed by the Ukrainian voters. The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses great liking and support for the Ukrainian people, who by peaceful measures and ways are defending their rights. It reminds Lithuania of its revival times and testifies to great changes which have taken place in Ukraine and the country‘s citizen’s choice to advance by the path of the European democracy. Ukraine can always count on Lithuania‘s solidarity in the aspiration to create and strengthen the state on the basis of the European democracy. It is necessary to stress that Ukraine stays a strategically important state, the main European neighbourhood policy partner. The events in Ukraine once again confirm the necessity of helping to implement the country‘s choice of the strategic European and Euro-Atlantic integration. The implementation of the EU interests in Eastern Europe and the region‘s stability will largely depend on the success of EU policy towards this country.
