Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania on the situation in Ukraine

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania expresses its deepest sympathy to the families of the victims of the clashes that broke out in Odessa yesterday and all those who suffered in them. Violent attacks that claimed victims have to be investigated and their organisers deserve to be duly punished.

The events of the recent days – human victims, kidnapping of  the OSCE observers and journalists and the further heightened tension in east and south Ukraine – cause great concern. We condemn the armed actions of the separatists, their instigators and supporters abroad. We urge all the parties once again to resolve the complicated situation that has developed in Ukraine peacefully through negotiations, to make use of the ways of resolving conflicts adopted at the meeting in Geneva held on 17 April, to bar the way to provocations and to spare no efforts to stabilise the situation.

We support the actions of the Ukrainian Government in seeking to restore order, peace and rule of law in the country. We urge the international community to support the Government‘s efforts to regulate the crisis.
