STATEMENT OF THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF LITHUANIA ON IRAN NUCLEAR PROGRAM

Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses serious concern for the recently revealed information about the construction of second Iranian nuclear facility and Iran’s missile tests, conducted this weekend and on Monday.

We support the efforts of the five permanent UN Security Council members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States) and Germany to convince Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program, to respect its international commitments and to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Lithuania supports the European Union, the United States and the international community’s efforts to engage Iran into negotiations, including adoption of measures of pressure - sanctions - if it appears necessary, in order to persuade Iran’s authorities to comply with its obligations.

We believe that Geneva meeting with Iran involving China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the U.S., which is to be held on 1 October, is a good opportunity for Iran to make concrete gestures to show respect to international obligations and relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

As a sign of good will, it would open way for a broader international cooperation in fight agaist proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and allow nations to develop civil nuclear power, but not nuclear weapons. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference next year will become a good opportunity to seek for diplomatic solutions and to comply with international obligations and requirements.
