STATEMENT OF THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS: ATTEMPTS AT DISCREDITING THE PARTICIPATION OF LITHUANIA IN THE EU NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICY WILL NOT REACH THE GOAL
Lately, Lithuanian and some foreign news media have been repeatedly spreading false news regarding the supposed embezzlement of funds allocated to conduct the European Union Neighbourhood policy.
Without reporting any facts, but manipulating some hints and assumptions the speculations are spread claiming that Lithuanian diplomats could have stolen the US funds allocated to the promotion of democracy, even though such funds are not administrated by Lithuanian state institutions. Sometimes the media blunders out even about putative assassination attempts. Bringing ungrounded accusations, some publications already openly libel Lithuanian politicians and statesmen.
We can only assess these methods as attempts at discrediting the participation of Lithuania in the EU Neighbourhood policy. This is becoming an obvious problem of Lithuanian foreign policy and national security.
Lithuania remains valued by the USA and the EU partners as a model of an active participant of the EU Neighbourhood policy.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that attempts at discrediting Lithuania will not force Lithuania to refuse of its political and moral commitments to disseminate common European values in the EU Neighbourhood.
