STABILITY IN THE SOUTHERN CAUCASUS IS INSEPARABLE FROM SECURITY OF THE WHOLE EUROPE
On 12 October in Tbilisi Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas who was on working visit to Georgia met with the President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili and discussed topical issues of bilateral relations.
Georgian President thanked Lithuania for close cooperation in Georgia’s way to Euro-Atlantic integration.
The Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy underlined that Georgia’s success depends on implementation of European reforms.
“Georgia’s way to success lies through Europe,” – Minister Vaitiekūnas said.
At the meeting with Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Gela Bezhuashvili the crisis in Georgian-Russian relations was discussed. In Mr Vaitiekūnas’ opinion, in the current situation it is the most important for Georgia to show restraint and continue search for dialogue basing on assistance of Western partners.
“Stability in the Southern Caucasus is inseparable from the whole Europe’s – which means our too – security,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister noted.
At the meeting with Georgian State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration Giorgi Baramidze the prospects of European Neighbourhood Policy in the Southern Caucasus and the implementation of the EU-Georgia Action Plan were discussed. Lithuanian Foreign Minister expressed support to Georgia’s aspirations of integration into the EU and NATO and promised Lithuania’s assistance in achieving these objectives.
“Our states have similar historical experience, therefore we understand the strivings of Georgian people,” Minister Vaitiekūnas said and underlined that small states should stand together in the modern world.
In Tbilisi the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy was also received by the Chairman of the Parliament Nino Burjanadze and Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli. At the meetings bilateral relations were discussed, opinions on Georgia’s relations with NATO and regional cooperation were exchanged.
