SPEAKING POINTS OF MINISTER VYGAUDAS UŠACKAS AT THE EU GENERAL AFFAIRS AND EXTERNAL RELATIONS COUNCIL. Brussels, 23 February 2009
During economic turbulences the EU should demonstrate the unity of purpose in and for the single market instead of implementing individual protectionist measures.
Enlarged and open single EU market of nearly half a billion consumers along with free trade agreements has been the driving force for impressive European growth in the last decade. We should not change our course.
It is also very important to retain solidarity of all EU Member States in addressing the rescue measures in the face of a deepening recession. We are working within the EU to ensure that all the Member States have equal access to the credit lines from private banks and the European Investment Bank. This would enable to make the necessary financial injections for business enterprises, so that they could continue their development.
We are also working within the EU on the European Economy Recovery Plan. By the European Council on the 19th of March we have to agree on the list of strategic energy interconnection projects, such as Swedish-Baltic Electricity Bridge. This will contribute to the modernization of Baltic energy infrastructure and its integration with the rest of Europe.
We strongly support the Eastern Partnership initiative which will anchor countries from Azerbaijan to Belarus closer to the EU by facilitating the movement of people, trade and cooperation in the energy field. We also expect that through the EU’s Eastern Partnership we will be able to engage our Eastern neighbours in adopting the practices of good governance and creating open societies.
