SHARING BEST PRACTICES IN THE FIELD OF NUCLEAR SAFETY AND NON-PROLIFERATION HELPS CREATE SAFER REGIONAL SPACE, SAYS LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER

An international seminar “Elements of Nuclear Security” takes place at the Centre of Excellence (COE) for Nuclear Security at the Border Guard School in Medininkai on 4-8 November. The seminar is attended by six Georgian senior officials who represent the country’s institutions operating in the field of nuclear security.

The Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrius Krivas welcomed the participants of the event and emphasized the long-term friendly relations between Lithuania and Georgia. A.Krivas underlined that the joint training and sharing best practices and experience in the field of nuclear safety and non-proliferation would contribute to closer cooperation between the countries and the creation of a safe regional space, and would strengthen the countries’ capacity to combat illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radioactive materials.

The Centre of Excellence for Nuclear Security that was established in Medininkai in 2012 aspires to become a training centre where many Lithuanian and foreign officers can train together strengthening collaboration and cooperation in the field of nuclear safety and security.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs actively contributes to the activities of the Nuclear Security Centre of Excellence. This seminar is financed under the Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Programme.

At the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė presented a vision of Lithuania’s contribution to nuclear safety, which was based on the need to strengthen international cooperation.

The successful activities of the Nuclear Security Centre of Excellence in Medininkai contribute to preparations for the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague in 2014. It is expected that Lithuania’s solid contribution to the global community’s fight against nuclear smuggling will be presented at the Summit.
