SECURITY POLICY CONSULTATIONS BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND TURKEY HELD IN ANKARA

On 23 October, security policy consultations between Lithuania and Turkey took place in the capital of Turkey Ankara.

The delegation, headed by Director of Transatlantic Cooperation and Security Policy Department of Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vytautas Leškevičius, met with the representatives of Department of the International Security of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Head of the Turkish Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Vahit Erdem.

Issues concerning stabilization of situation in the Southern Caucasus, relations with Russia, Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), cooperation in NATO, arms control and antimissile defense were discussed during the meetings.

Both countries declared their support to Ukraine and Georgia in their Euro-Atlantic aspirations and agreed that NATO’s Membership Action Plan for these countries should be adopted in the near future.

Lithuania congratulated Turkey, which was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, and stressed the necessity of including the issue of sea-dumped chemical weapons in the agenda of this organization.

During the meeting with the Head of the Turkish Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly V.Erdem international and energy security were discussed. It was agreed that similar consultations should be regularly organized in future.
