SCHENGEN AREA, THE EURO AND ENERGY ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES FOR LITHUANIA

On 12 June during the General Affairs and External Relations Council  (GAERC) meeting in Luxembourg Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of  Lithuania Antanas Valionis talking about preparations for the June European Council drew attention to three issues that are the most important for Lithuania – the enlargement of the Schengen and the Euro areas and Common EU energy policy with neighbour states.

The Minister stressed that technical and administrative obstacles should not delay the enlargement of the Schengen area and the internal EU border control should be removed in 2007.

The Minister also stressed that Lithuania invited to continue political discussion on the enlargement of the Euro area at the  European Council.

“This is an issue of both Lithuania’s prospects and European future. Furthermore the Euro zone enlargement criteria in the EU Agreement can be interpreted differently, therefore this process should be clarified,” Minister Valionis stated.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister invited to continue diversification of energy resources supply to the EU from Caspian region and Central Asia and plan specific steps of the EU in spring 2007.
