Russia is handed a protest note over the shelling of Ukrainian cities
On 12 January, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed a diplomatic note expressing strong protest to the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Russian Federation over the continued mass and indiscriminate shelling of Ukrainian cities by Russian military forces. The note stresses that the main objective of these attacks is the killing of civilians and the destruction of civilian infrastructure to intimidate Ukrainian society.
The document draws Russian attention to the issue of Ukrainian residential areas hit by Russian missile and drone attacks last week, especially in Kyiv and Kryvyi Rih, and stresses the fact that millions of Ukrainians are forced to suffer darkness and cold due to Russia's fault. The note also draws attention to the damage caused by the Russian Federation to Qatar's embassy in Ukraine, and stresses that the use of a nuclear-capable missile, striking the Lviv region, near the border with the European Union and NATO, poses a big threat to the security not only of Ukraine, but the rest of Europe and the world.
The Republic of Lithuania has declared that the strikes by the Russian Federation on peaceful residents, residential areas and civilian infrastructure constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and are war crimes. Lithuania demands that Russia immediately ceases its aggression against Ukraine, withdraws its occupying forces from the entire internationally recognised territory of Ukraine and compensates for all the damage caused by the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
