ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION "THE TREATY OF LISBON: WHAT’S NEXT?” IS ORGANIZED IN VILNIUS

On 17 January in the Constitution Hall of the Seimas, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the Seimas and the Representation of the European Commission in Lithuania is organizing a round table discussion "The Treaty of Lisbon: what‘s next?” A welcome speech will be delivered by the Speaker of the Seimas Viktoras Muntianas, the main presentations will be made by the representative of the European Parliament at the Intergovernmental Conference Elmar Brok, Director-General of the Directorate General Communication at the European Commission Claus Haugaard Sørensen, the Executive Chairman of the European Strategy Forum and Director of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) Peter Ludlow. Experts from Lithuania and other countries of the European Union will also take part in the discussions.

The goal of the event is to initiate a public discussion about the place of the Treaty of Lisbon in the history of the EU development and its importance in the life of EU citizens, to get prepared to ratify the treaty in Lithuania, to encourage the dialogue of the public on the further steps in creation and realization of our vision of Europe.

Over the last years intense discussions were held on the EU‘s future, its institutional architecture and policies. The debates took place in the Convention on the Future of Europe, two intergovernmental conferences, and in national forums of Member States.

On 13 December 2007, the Treaty of Lisbon was signed to finalize the European Union reform process.
