REPRESENTATIVES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION’S POLITICAL AND SECURITY COMMITTEE AND THE NICOLAIDIS GROUP TO PAY A VISIT TO VILNIUS

On 3-5 July, representatives of the Political and Security Committee (PSC) of the Council of the European Union (EU) and the Nicolaidis Group will pay an informal visit to Vilnius.

Representatives of the Political and Security Committee (PSC) and the Nicolaidis Group will visit Gaižiūnai Military Ground in Rukla, where the equipment and machinery of the Lithuanian army will be demonstrated.  The guests will also have an opportunity to observe military exercises on the training field. The guests will also get acquainted with the Baltic Air Surveillance Network and Control System (BALTNET) and visit the Joint Control and Reporting Centre (RCR) in Karmėlava.

The cultural programme will include a tour of the Old Town of Vilnius, Trakai, Kaunas, and Pažaislis. The guests will also visit the Lithuanian open-air folk life museum of Rumšiškės and see the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius. The visit is co-organised with the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

The Political and Security Committee brings together ambassadorial level representatives from each member state of the EU, as well as high-ranking officials of the European institutions (the European External Action Service (EEAS) mainly). The Political and Security Committee (PSC) is a permanent structure of the Council of the European Union (EU), which monitors the international situation in the areas covered by the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). The PSC contributes to the drafting and implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). The PSC is the Council body which deals with crisis situations and examines all the options that might be considered as the EU’s response. It is therefore for the PSC to propose to the Council the political objectives to be pursued and to recommend a cohesive set of options for resolving the crisis. The Nicolaidis Group prepares the meetings of the Political and Security Committee (PSC).
