REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE BALTIC STATES DISCUSS THE RUN-UP TO THE NEGOTIATIONS ON THE EU'S MULTI-ANNUAL BUDGET IN RIGA

On 8 December in Latvia, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Egidijus Meilūnas and representatives from foreign ministries of Latvia and Estonia discussed the coordination of actions when preparing for the negotiations for the 2014-2020 multiannual budget of the European Union.

The meeting discussed direct cohesion policy and agricultural benefits and other issues that are important for the Baltic States.

E.Meilūnas noted that the European Commission’s proposal on the financing of the closure of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant was not acceptable for Lithuania.

In order to take into account common interests of the Baltic states as much as possible in the political negotiation process that starts in 2012, it is necessary to permanently continue to cooperate and coordinate actions.

The necessity to strengthen and coordinate actions in the negotiations of the Baltic States on the next EU multiannual financial framework was stressed at the meetings of the Prime Ministers and Presidents of the Baltic States in November and December in 2011.
