Regional Convention of Honorary Consuls of Lithuania organized in Sao Paulo
On October 21, the regional convention of the honorary consuls of Lithuania in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean took place at the Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania in Sao Paulo.
The convention was attended by the honorary consuls from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile, who were greeted by Mantvydas Bekešius, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, on his visit to Sao Paulo.
The vice-minister emphasised the great importance of the honorary consuls in representing Lithuania. “Having in mind that we do not have residing ambassadors in this region, the importance of your work becomes more crucial than ever – we can claim that you are our ambassadors in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean,” noted the official.
The Vice-Minister stressed the impact of the honorary consuls in developing bilateral relationships of Lithuania with the countries of their residence through consolidating Lithuanian communities and providing support to Lithuanian citizens in times of distress, when they are in need of consulate assistance, frequently free of charge and at personal expense.
Mr. Bekešius encouraged the honorary consuls of Lithuania to spread information about the conditions for business development offered by Lithuania, the potential of export of Lithuanian products and available tourism and study possibilities. According to the Vice-Minister, Lithuanian universities and colleges offer top quality education and students from the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are very welcome.
During the meeting, the Vice-Minister prompted the honorary consuls to prepare for appropriate commemoration of the 100th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Lithuania, which will be celebrated in 2018.
In the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean the honorary consuls represent the interests of Lithuania without financial restitution in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Columbia, Mexico, Peru, Salvador, Uruguay and Venezuela.
