Regarding the “elections” in Tskhinvali/South Ossetia Region of Georgia

In view of the reports of the “elections” in Tskhinvali/South Ossetia Region of Georgia on 8 June, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton stated that “The European Union supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as recognised by international law” and recalled that “the European Union does not recognise the constitutional and legal framework within which these elections have taken place.”

In this context, Lithuania emphasizes the importance of the Geneva International Discussions in ensuring security and stability in the region. Only a negotiated solution to the conflict in Georgia acceptable to all parties can grant legitimacy to the elections in Tskhinvali/South Ossetia Region.
