REFORMS OF NATO PARTNERSHIP POLICY WILL ENABLE TO INCREASE ITS EFFICIENCY AND FLEXIBILITY, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS
On 15 April at the North Atlantic Council meeting in Berlin, the reform of NATO’s partnership package was approved that will enable NATO’s more efficient and flexible partnership policy, says Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis who attended the meeting.The newly approved “Berlin partnership package” includes the following new guidelines for NATO’s partnership policy: complemented strategic tasks, priority cooperation areas, greater role of partners in the decision-making process.
The North Atlantic Council meeting, which was also attended by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, focused on cooperation between NATO and the European Union.On the same day, the participants of the meeting of the NATO-Georgia Commission in Berlin discussed the security situation in the South Caucasus.
“Lithuania, the Embassy of which in Tbilisi is currently the NATO Contact Point Embassy in Georgia, fully supports Georgia’s aspirations for NATO membership and attempts to accelerate this process through concrete actions,” Minister A.Ažubalis said.
Participants at the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission discussed the situation in Ukraine and explored priorities for future cooperation. NATO foreign ministers thanked Ukraine for active participation in the Alliance’s military missions and requested Ukraine’s greater involvement.
At the NATO-Russia Council meeting, participants exchanged opinions on the situation in Libya, presented the results of the NATO-led operation, discussed the issue of missile defence, talked about the cooperation in the fight against terrorism and announced the launch of the trust fund for helicopters in Afghanistan.
