Protest note handed to Russia over continued mass shelling of Ukraine
On 28 October, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania handed another diplomatic note of protest to the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Russian Federation regarding the continued mass shelling of Ukraine by Russian military forces.
Last week alone, Russia used more than 1,300 guided aerial bombs, nearly 1,200 combat drones, and more than 50 missiles of various types against Ukraine. These attacks have damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, killing and injuring civilians in various regions of Ukraine. In the note of protest, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the killing of Ukrainian media representatives – a reporter and cameraman of the international Ukrainian TV channel “Freedom TV” – by Russian forces in Kramatorsk on October 23. It was emphasized that journalists, like all civilians, are protected under the Geneva Conventions (concerning war victims) and international humanitarian law.
Lithuania will continue to advocate for stricter and more effective sanctions against Russia, increased support for Ukraine’s defense capabilities, and accountability for all those responsible for Russia's war of aggression and war crimes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that Russia's systematic war crimes against Ukraine cannot become "business as usual" and is prepared to respond to them on an ongoing basis.
