PROSPECTS OF TURKEY’S EU INTEGRATION WERE DISCUSSED IN VILNIUS

On 8 December Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas met Turkish Minister of State in Charge of Economic Affairs and Chief Negotiator for the European Union Ali Babacan and discussed with him development of bilateral political relations, EU accession negotiations issues and prospects of Turkey’s integration into the EU. “Lithuania strongly supports Turkey’s EU perspective. We fully acknowledge strategic, political, economic, and cultural importance of Turkey to the European Union and want the negotiations to continue,” the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy said and underlined the importance of dialogue among cultures and religions where Turkey plays a special role.

“Lithuania’s experience says that reforms and the way to Europe is the way to the future,” Mr Vaitiekūnas said.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister noticed that now Lithuania and Turkey are the members of NATO.

“We appreciate Turkey’s participation in NATO Air Policing mission in the Baltic States,”  Mr Vaitiekūnas said.

Turkish Minister of State expressed Turkey’s expectations for further Lithuania’s support for Turkey’s striving towards the EU membership. Mr Babacan told about the reforms that take place in Turkey to meet the EU membership criteria. The Ministers also discussed the issues related to the opening up of ports and air ports to Cyprus.

According to Lithuanian Foreign Minister the fulfilment of obligations is very important to Turkey’s EU accession negotiations.

Turkish Minister of State in Charge of Economic Affairs and Chief Negotiator for the European Union Ali Babacan also met with Lithuanian Minister of Economy Vytas Navickas and Lithuanian Prime-Minister Gediminas Kirkilas.
