PROMINENT LITHUANIAN ARTISTS RECEIVE THE STARS OF LITHUANIA’S MILLENNIUM

On 2 April, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis conferred the award of honour of Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs ‘The Star of Lithuania’s Millennium’ on theatre directors Eimuntas Nekrošius and Oskaras Koršunovas, and video artist Deimantas Narkevičius. This award of honour was given for their merits of promoting Lithuania in the world.

“You are the ones, who largely represent Lithuania in the world. You are Lithuania’s envoys,” the Minister said during the ceremony that was held at Lithuania’s MFA.

O.Koršunovas, who spoke on behalf of the recipients of the award, said that “culture people promoted Lithuania’s name in a wonderful way”. The director expressed satisfaction that this was noticed and appreciated.

The Lithuanian National Prize winners, theatre directors E.Nekrošius and O.Koršunovas have been awarded the highest theatre awards in different countries. Spectators from various countries of the world viewed their plays. The theatre directors received awards at prestigious festivals. E.Nekrošius won the UBU prize for the best foreign play in Italy three times. He received two Golden Mask awards and was awarded a prize at the Baltic House (Baltiyskiy Dom) International Theatre Festival in Russia. Besides other awards, O.Koršunovas has received a Europe Theatre Prize for New Theatrical Realities.

In 2008, the Lithuanian National Prize laureate D.Narkevičius received the prestigious Vincent van Gogh Biennial Award for Contemporary Art, which is given to the most successful European artists every two years. His artworks are on exposition in most famous museums of modern art. Art museums and foundations from various countries purchase his works.
