PRACTICAL ISSUES OF LITHUANIAN-UKRAINIAN COOPERATION WERE DISCUSSED IN KIEV

On 11 October in Kiev Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas who was on working visit to Ukraine met with the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko and discussed important issues of energy security and bilateral cooperation. 

“Ukraine is very important for Lithuania, as well as Lithuania is for Ukraine.  I do not imagine safe and stable  Europe without safe and prosperous Ukraine. Lithuania is a close neighbour of Ukraine so we can not remain indifferent to the events in this country,” Minister Vaitiekūnas said.

In Kiev Lithuanian Foreign Minister Vaitiekūnas also met with the First Vice Chairman of the Highest Rada of Ukraine Adam Martynyuk, Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Dmytro Tabachnyk and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Boris Tarasyuk. During the meetings opinions on political situation and reforms in Ukraine, the country’s relations with the European Union and NATO were exchanged.

At the meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Tarasyuk Minister Vaitiekūnas marked the importance of Ukraine’s accession to the World Trade Organisation with the view of the new agreement between the European Union and Ukraine. According to Mr Vaitiekūnas this agreement would pave the way for Ukraine’s rapprochement with the European Union.

“Integration into the EU is not only about political declarations – it starts with small concrete actions and accession to the World Trade Organisation is one of them,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister said.

The Ministers also discussed practical cooperation issues - informing the society about the NATO membership, cultural cooperation projects. The Joint Lithuanian-Ukrainian Statement  on cooperation in implementation of the EU-Ukraine Action Plan in the field of social development, public procurement, insurance, agriculture and justice was signed.

Ukrainian officials thanked Lithuania for active support and sharing its experience on Ukraine’s way of Euro-Atlantic integration.

Lithuanian and Ukrainian Foreign Ministers also discussed preparations for the state visit of Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus to Ukraine that will take place in November.
