Political consultations between Lithuania and Türkiye took place in Vilnius
On 20 and 21 May, the Lithuania-Türkiye political consultations were held in Vilnius on 20 and 21 May led by Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye Mehmet Kemal Bozay.
The consultations focused on topical issues of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, the complex geopolitical situation in the region, and the world. Mitkus pointed out the important role of Türkiye as a NATO member, the EU candidate country, and regional leader in ensuring security in the region, and stressed the need for closer cooperation to navigate current challenges, military and hybrid threats. The Vice-Minister also stressed the need to maintain strong and consistent support for Ukraine, prevent sanctions circumvention by Russia, and achieve sustainable and just peace.
During the consultations, Mitkus presented the country's readiness to hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of next year and the main priorities for the Presidency. Lithuania's Foreign Vice-Minister also expressed support for Türkiye's strategic ambition to become an EU member and stressed the importance of continuing a constructive and mutually beneficial dialogue between the EU and Türkiye, especially in the areas of security, economy, trade, transport, and energy, which allows to achieve concrete results of mutual interest.
The participants of the meeting also discussed the directions of bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Türkiye and new cooperation opportunities, including in the defence industry, joint initiatives for the implementation of projects in Ukraine, as well as the further collaboration on municipal projects in the fields of green transformation and energy efficiency by Türkiye and Lithuania.
