On 14–15 September, political consultations were held in Bishkek between the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, Kristupas Vaitiekūnas and Meder Abakirov. During the consultations, the participants discussed bilateral relations between Lithuania and Kyrgyzstan, opportunities to strengthen cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, culture, and other areas, and exchanged views on current regional and international security issues. The importance of supporting Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression was emphasized, as was the need to prevent the circumvention of international sanctions against Russia.

Significant attention was given to relations between the European Union and Kyrgyzstan, reforms underway in Kyrgyzstan, the EU-Central Asia cooperation agenda, the development of regional connectivity and transport links, and common security challenges.

During the visit, Vice-Minister Vaitiekūnas also met with other representatives of Kyrgyz authorities, discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation, and Lithuania’s preparations to hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2027. It was agreed to continue exploring opportunities to develop business ties and dialogue.

During the meetings, the Vice-Minister thanked the Kyrgyz institutions for their professional and prompt assistance following the tragic death of the Lithuanian citizen and mountaineer Sergej Rubcov.

During the meetings, the Vice-Minister expressed his deep appreciation for the assistance and cooperation provided by the Kyrgyz authorities in conducting search and rescue operations. The Vice-Minister emphasised that he greatly appreciated the assistance and cooperation provided by the Kyrgyz services in carrying out the search and rescue operation.

During his meetings with representatives of the Lithuanian community living in Kyrgyzstan and local entrepreneurs, Vaitiekūnas discussed issues of concern to the community, opportunities for expanding economic cooperation, and ways to strengthen business ties between Lithuania and Kyrgyzstan.

Lithuania and Kyrgyzstan established diplomatic relations in 1992. In recent years, the two countries have maintained a regular political dialogue, and deepening cooperation between the EU and the Central Asian region is contributing to closer ties and the development of bilateral relations.
