POET K.BALMONT WHOSE MEMORY WAS HONOURED IN VILNIUS PROMOTED LITHUANIAN IDENTITY, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS
On 12 May at the ceremony of unveiling of the monument to Konstantin Balmont in Vilnius, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis noted that it was important to remember and appropriately honour every person who at one time or another had contributed to the promotion of the Lithuanian identity.According to the Minister, all his life K.Balmont emphasized his Lithuanian background, contributed significantly to the dissemination of the Lithuanian culture abroad, while his initiatives played a part in the consolidation of foundations of Lithuania’s statehood.
Poet and diplomat Jurgis Baltrušaitis also stimulated the artist’s interest in Lithuania.K.Balmont (1867-1942) was one of the first translators of modern Lithuanian poetry into Russian and acquainted Russian readers with the literary work of Maironis, Vydūnas, Vincas Krėvė, Liudas Gira and other authors. The poet reviewed books by Lithuanian authors in the international press, discussed albums of Lithuanian artists and presented dictionaries that were published in Lithuania.
Minister A.Ažubalis thanked J.Baltrušaitis Charity and Support Foundation of Lithuanian and Russian Cooperation for the initiative to perpetuate the memory of the poet.
