PHOTO EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO CULTURE AND HERITAGE OF LITVAKS IN VILNIUS OPENS AT THE MFA

On 29 April at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė opened a photography exhibition “Jerusalem of Lithuania: Time and People”, which reflects the history of Vilnius as the Jewish cultural and spiritual centre of Litvaks from Lithuania and neighbouring countries, as well as today’s activities of the Jewish Community of Lithuania.

The exhibition was co-organized by the Jewish Culture & Information Centre, and the Jewish communities of Lithuania and Vilnius. The patron of the exhibition is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“This exhibition consists not only of memories. The photos from the Lithuanian Jewish Community reflect the main features of community life,” Vice-Minister A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė said at the opening ceremony.

The opening of the exhibition was attended by representatives from the Jewish Community of Lithuania, persons who foster the Litvak heritage, and a numerous delegation of the Association of Vilna Jews in Israel, led by the Head of the Association of Vilna Jews in Israel Miriam Kantor.

Such a delegation has come to Lithuania for the third time to honour the memory of their loved ones, who are victims of the Holocaust. The guests are visiting memorial places that are special to the Jews, who originally came from Lithuania, and they are getting acquainted with Lithuania today. Holocaust survivors, participants of the traditional March of the Living were received by the leadership of the Lithuanian Seimas (Parliament), Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius. Together with official representatives from Israel, Lithuania and the Jewish Community of Lithuania, participants of the March of the Living will honour victims of the Holocaust in Paneriai.
