PERSPECTIVES OF LITHUANIA’S REGIONAL COOPERATION WITH NORDIC COUNTRIES DISCUSSED
On 22 March State Secretary of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Algimantas Rimkūnas and State Secretary of the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs Johan Tiedemann discussed the perspectives of Lithuania’s regional cooperation with Nordic countries.
The most attention was paid to the activities of European Humanities University (EHU) in Vilnius. A.Rimkūnas informed the visitor about the support of Lithuanian government to EHU and indicated that Lithuania and its foreign partners are strongly committed to guarantee the success of university’s activities and its future development.
The Government of Sweden is one of the university’s donors. It donated financial support for the establishment of the university in Vilnius and funds the master studies’ programme directly, as well as through the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Participants of the meeting also exchanged opinions on possibilities for Lithuanian institutions to take part in the Nordic Council programmes and run common projects, which aim at the development of democracy.
In Sweden, as well as in other Nordic countries one member of the government has and additional function to coordinate the cooperation of Nordic countries and to represent the country in the cooperation forum for the governments - the Nordic Council of Ministers. The Minister for Social Security performs these functions in Sweden. There are two State Secretaries at the Ministry and one of them is responsible for the Nordic cooperation.
